CALUMATH

CALUMATH is a web-based program that facilitates the construction of interactive, educational web pages involving mathematics. Using CALUMATH, web pages suitable for use in K-12 and college level classrooms can be constructed. Pages typically include graphs, animations, and the web tools, such as boxes, drop-down menus, and buttons, to allow students to interact with them.

CALUMATH is free software: see the license information at the left for full details. Educators and students are encouraged to use and share CALUMATH web pages.

What is CALUMATH?

The purpose of CALUMATH is to create high quality, interactive, mathematics web pages for use in classrooms and at home.

There are four parts to CALUMATH:

1. There are the CALUMATH web pages themselves that have been constructed. Click on the button at the left to see pages being piloted in College Algebra at Purdue University Calumet. Samples of pages showing the great variety of CALUMATH capabilities for use at many grade levels can be seen by clicking the Demo Pages link above.
2. The CALUMATH Page Maker is the heart of the CALUMATH system. This user-friendly web page is used to construct interactive CALUMATH web pages. It also allows you to modify CALUMATH pages created by others. To view the page, click on the CaluMath Page Maker link at the top of the page or click here: CALUMATH Page Maker. Information about how to use the CALUMATH Page Maker can be found at the links on the left.
3. The Tutorial page consists of tutorials that provide step by step instructions on how to use the CALUMATH Page Maker. To see the Tutorial Page, click on the link at the top of the page or click here: CALUMATH Tutorial Page.
4. Behind the scenens, the CALUMATH program is quietly working in the background. It is actually an extensive list of commands, written in JavaScript, that allows matematics and web tools to be combined into interactive web pages.

Web Browser Requirements

CALUMATH has been carefully designed to be compatible with all browsers that support JavaScript standards. Pages constructed with the CALUMATH Page Maker should work in a large variety of web browsers. CALUMATH pages should work correctly in the following browsers:

1. Internet Explorer: Versions 5.0, 5.5, and later.
2. Mozilla: Versions 1.0 and later.
3. Firefox: Versions 1.0 and later.
4. Netscape: Versions 6.0 and later.
5. Opera: Versions 7.5 and later.
6. Safari: Versions 2.0 and later, except for a small Safari bug that affects hidden graphs on a page.

The CALUMATH Page Maker allows you to construct CALUMATH pages and requires newer versions of web browsers. In other words, if you want to create CALUMATH pages, you need to have a more up to date browser. The pages you create, however, can be used by students with less up-to-date browsers.

The CALUMATH Page Maker works in:

1. Firefox: Versions 1.0 and later.
2. Mozilla: Versions 1.0 and later.
3. Netscape: Versions 6.0 and later.
4. Internet Explorer: Versions 6.0 and later. Unfortunately the CALUMATH Page Maker can work slowly in Internet Explorer unless you pay attention to the warnings below.
5. Safari: Versions 2.0 and later

The CALUMATH Page Maker does not currently work in Opera. This will be addressed in the near future.

Never Use the Back or Forward button of your browser to navigate through CALUMATH pages.

Pop-up windows are an integral part of CALUMATH. Your browser must allow pop-up windows for CALUMATH to function properly.

Depending on your internet connection, the first time you open an Interactive MA 153 page, it may take about a minute to load. After that, each page should load immediately.

Recommendations

It is recommended that you use the Firefox web browser to open the CALUMATH Page Maker.

To use the CALUMATH Page Maker, download it to your computer using the link at the top of this page. Do not run it off the web site.

After spending a long time constructing a web page with the CALUMATH Page Maker, you may notice that the CALUMATH Page Maker will start to run slowly. Simply save your work, close the browser, open the browser again and load the page you saved. The CALUMATH Page Maker will run at its normal speed again.

Internet Explorer Issues:

Some security settings in Internet Explorer will prevent CALUMATH pages from correctly functioning if the pages are stored on your computer. To correct this, open Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu at the very top of the page, then Click on Internet Options. This opens up a dialog window. Click the Advanced Tab. Scroll down until you come to the Secutity Section. Make sure there is a check next to Allow active content to run in files on My Computer. Then click the OK button.

While using the CALUMATH Page Maker, when you want to View, Edit, or Cut and Paste the page you are constructing, a window will pop up to allow you do these things. These windows will close automatically at the appropriate time. Do not close them yourself (by X-ing out of them). This is especially important with Internet Explorer, which will cause the CALUMATH Page Maker to run very slowly if windows are closed by the user. The only exception is if a pop-up window has a Close button on it. You can always close a window with a Close button.

When using Internet Explorer with the CALUMATH Page Maker, please close any other Internet Explorer window before opening the CALUMATH Page Maker. This will help Internet Explorer to run more efficiently.
